Setting The Most Accurate Tire Pressures

If tire pressures are critical to your car's performance - closer than +/- 1 psi - then you really need what this gauge can do for you. Pressures must be set in the pits but the tires sitting there can easily vary by as much as 20°. You are setting on-track hot pressures by guessing (lots of experience here) at the starting cold pressure. If you want the tire to grow to 38 psi on the track you set it in the pits at say 28 psi. Sounds reasonable. You have been doing it for years.

But what was the temperature in the pits? If it was 80° (like it usually is) you are OK. But what if one or two had been in the sun and had crept up to 90°? For every 10° temp change there is a .8 psi change. So instead of 28 psi (at 90°) you effectively set it at 27.2 psi (what it would have been at 80° rather than 90°).

Would this make a difference? If not, take a look at our other tire pressure gauges. If it would, (NASCAR™ Cup teams fret about .2 - .3 psi) you really need to set all starting pressures at the same temperature week in and week out. This way the on-track pressures will be the same. But how do you do that? You will have great difficulty controlling the temperatures (impossible really). And yet you need to.

A better way is to correct the pressures to what they would have been had you been able to keep the tires at a constant temperature. You could use a pyrometer to measure the tires temp, then use a calculator to compute what the pressure should be at that temp rather than just putting in 28 psi. Slow and cumbersome to say the least.

But you don't have to do that. This "Temperature Compensating Tire Pressure Gauge" will do it for you. It can take the temperature of the tire using a traditional tire temp probe, instantly calculate the correction back to a standard temperature, and show the pressure you should be putting in the tire. It may not be the actual pressure at that moment. But it will be the correct pressure when it counts, on the track.

Here's how it works:

Insert the tire probe in the side of the gauge. Measure the temperature the usual way - in the tread area. Push the Mode button to get to Temp Compensation. While in the Mode the pressures will be compensated and correct back to a standard temperature (80°). Push Mode again to go to tire temps or back to traditional tire pressures.

A TOTALLY NEW KIND OF TIRE PRESSURE GAUGE

A Traditional Tire Pressure Gauge

Displays actual tire pressures. Just take each tire pressure, like when using a traditional gauge but push the Store Memory button and all 4 pressures are available for display.

Reads pressures to 100 psi. Accurate throughout the range to 1/10 of a pound!

A Precision Pyrometer

Ultra fast response. Takes tire temps as you normally would. Just insert the probe into the tire and when the temp stabilizes, push Store Memory. All 12 temps are stored on the display so you don't need to write them down as you go.

Temperature Compensated Tire Gauge

Displays what pressures would be at the standard temperature (80°F).

  • Corrects tire pressures back to a standard temperature
  • Displays what the pressure would be if the tire was actually at this pressure
  • Will also function as a traditional tire pressure gauge showing actual pressures - all 4 stored on display
  • And it will serve as a precision tire pyrometer, displaying all 12 tire temps at the same time
  • Includes adjustable length probe
  • Backlight for night use
  • Three bleed buttons - use 1, 2 or all 3 buttons for faster bleed off
  • 17" red hose with swivel angle chuck - also includes ball chuck
  • Silver case for safe storage

Metric Option: The gauge is user switchable to metric readings. Please see the full product instructions.

Materials

Material Selection Guide

We offer 4 materials for our numbers, letters and panel numbers: Magnetic, Reusable Vinyl, Permanent Vinyl and Static Cling. They are designed for use on different types of cars and for different kinds of use

Magnetic

Magnetic material is the most durable removable product we sell. It works well for application on ferrous bodies cars at speeds generally below 70 MPH. It can be used for higher speeds, but may have a tendency to blow off.

 PROS:

  • Durable
  • Lasts decades.
  • Easy to clean

 CONS:

  • Can lose flexibility in cold weather (should be put on hood in sunlight to warm up when using at events under 45 degrees)
  • Limited to approximately 70mph. If using at speeds higher than this, it is recommended to apply a small piece of tape to the leading edge to avoid blowing off.
  • Does not adhere to non ferrous cars (Corvette, Lotus)

Reusable Vinyl

SOLOTIME reusable vinyl products allow you to apply temporary numbers to your car and reuse them event after event. The material is extra thick (about 8-12mils, compared to 2-3 for a regular decal)which helps prevent tearing or stretching the numbers when they are removed.

The low tack adhesive numbers come on a paper backing that allows you to store them between events.

PROS:

  • Adheres to any smooth surface (including windows)
  • Will stay on at any speed.
  • Works in any temperature.

CONS:

  • Must be put back on backing paper in between uses.
  • Must be put on a clean car and adhesive must be kept clean.
  • Typical users get between 6-18 uses.

Permanent Vinyl

Click to see the installation instructions for this material

"Permanent" vinyl material is your typical material that ny pre made decal or sticker would be made with. It can be removed, but will be destroyed in the process of removal. The permanent vinyl is high quality 5-7 year rated outdoor material.

 PROS:

  • Very long lasting.
  • Will stay on at any speed.

CONS:

Cannot be removed without destroying

 Static Cling

Click for the static cling installation instructions.

SOLOTIME static cling products are autocross tested and work well for low speed events. These products cling to most smooth surfaces, such as fiberglass, plastic, steel, or aluminum. They even cling to glass!

Each reusable static cling number or letter comes with a special paper backing that keeps them ready for the next autocross event. Special Note: Please test these numbers on your vehicle before you use them at a racing event.

Unlike strong magnets or adhesives, static cling products may blow off your vehicle during unusual racing or weather conditions. We recommend that you order extra numbers as a precaution.

PROS:
  • Inexpensive
  • Works on any smooth surface

CONS:

  • Must be applied very carefully.
  • Comes in white only and is not available as a base for panel/meatball numbers.
  • May come off during wet events.
